How to Set Up an Etsy Print Shop: A Step-by-Step Guide for New Sellers

Updated 28 October 2026 · 3 min read

Opening an Etsy shop takes an afternoon. Opening one that sells takes a plan. This guide is the plan we’d give a friend starting a print or poster shop today – the set-up, your first ten listings, and a week-by-week routine for the first month.

1. Decide what you sell – narrowly

The fastest-growing new shops pick a lane buyers can describe in three words: “retro travel posters”, “botanical kitchen prints”, “funny cards for dads”. A narrow theme helps in three ways:

Check the lane before you commit: search your three words on Etsy, look at how many results there are, and open the top listings. Lots of results with high favourites means demand; lots of results with very few favourites means a crowded, quiet market.

2. Shop set-up checklist

ItemWhat good looks like
Shop nameShort, easy to spell, not tied to one product so you can grow.
Shop icon and bannerYour logo or a crop of your best design – readable at small sizes.
About sectionWho you are, how your prints are made and posted. Buyers read it before buying gifts.
Delivery profilesRealistic processing time and a tracked option for larger prints.
Returns policyClear and fair – it reassures first-time buyers.
Production partnerIf someone else prints for you, add them as a production partner.

3. Your first ten listings

Listings are where shops win or lose. Each one needs four things done well.

Photos

Your first photo is your shop window in search. For prints, the strongest first photo is usually the artwork large and centred, with a little context. Then add: the print in a real-looking room, a close-up of the detail, frame options, a size guide, and how it’s packed. Etsy lets you add a short video too – listings with a video give buyers one more reason to stop scrolling.

Title

Etsy titles can be up to 140 characters, but the first few words matter most. Lead with what a buyer would type: “Margate Print”, not “Sunset Dreams”. Then add the style, the room or occasion, and the sizes.

Tags

You get 13 tags of up to 20 characters each – use all of them. Make them specific phrases (“margate travel print”) rather than single words (“print”). Our guide to Etsy tags goes through choosing all 13.

Description

Open with one or two sentences describing the artwork and who it suits, then the practical details: paper, sizes, framing, delivery. Keep it scannable.

4. Price so every sale is profitable

New sellers often price from competitors and discover later that fees ate the margin. Work it out per size, including:

Then add the profit you actually want. If a size can’t make a profit at a price buyers will pay, drop that size rather than selling it at a loss.

5. Your first 30 days, week by week

  1. Week 1 – shop set-up and your first ten listings. Don’t wait for perfect.
  2. Week 2 – ten more listings in the same lane. Look at which listings get views and favourites in your Etsy stats.
  3. Week 3 – improve the weakest: new first photo, more specific title and tags.
  4. Week 4 – make variations of what got favourites: same style, new places or subjects.
Coaching tip: favourites arrive long before sales. Treat a listing with favourites but no sales as a near-miss – check its price, delivery cost and first photo – and treat a listing with views but no favourites as a design or photo problem.

6. After your first sale

Ship quickly, then send a short, friendly message when the parcel arrives. Buyers who feel looked after leave reviews and come back. Our guide to Etsy customer care has the exact message to use, and tracking your orders tells you when to send it.

Frequently asked questions

How many listings should a new Etsy shop start with?

Aim for at least ten to twenty good listings before you put real effort into promotion. A fuller shop gives buyers more to browse and gives Etsy more chances to show you in search.

Do I need my own printer to sell prints on Etsy?

No. Many sellers use print-on-demand partners that print and post each order for them. Etsy asks you to name production partners on the listing.

How long until my first sale?

It varies a lot. Most new shops take a few weeks; consistent new listings, good first photos and specific tags shorten it more than anything else.
