How to sell prints on Etsy in the UK: a step-by-step guide for 2026
Selling prints is one of the easiest ways to start on Etsy: no stock, no equipment, and every design can be offered in many sizes. Here’s the whole route, in order.
1. Decide what you’ll sell
Pick a lane buyers search for – city and travel posters, botanical prints, music, nursery art, quotes – rather than “a bit of everything”. A focused shop ranks better and is easier to style.
2. Choose how the prints are made
Most new sellers use print on demand: a printer prints each order and posts it to your buyer. In the UK, PrintShrimp, Printful, Printify, Gelato and Prodigi all work with Etsy. Our print-on-demand comparison covers how to choose.
3. Open your shop
- Pick a shop name that fits your lane and is easy to say.
- Add a clear banner, an “about” section with your story, and your shop policies.
- Set up delivery profiles that match your printer’s real delivery times.
4. Work out your prices before you list
Etsy takes a transaction fee, payment processing, a regulatory fee and – for most UK sellers – VAT on those fees. Use the free Etsy fee calculator to see what you keep, and the price calculator to set prices for the margin you want.
5. Make listings that sell
- Photos: 8 or more – room mockups, a close-up, frame options and a size guide. See how to make Etsy mockups.
- Title: lead with what buyers type – “Margate Print | Margate Travel Poster”.
- 13 tags: specific 2–3 word phrases. Check yours with the tag checker.
- Description: sizes, paper, delivery, and what’s included.
Suite 13 makes the room mockups, title, 13 tags and description for each design and saves it as an Etsy draft – with print files sent to your printer.
6. Follow Etsy’s rules
Designs must be your own. If a printer makes the item, say so in the listing and give the correct ship-from location; if AI helped create the design, say that in the description too. Our guide to Etsy’s AI and print-on-demand rules explains what to write.
7. Get your first sales, then keep going
List steadily (20–50 listings gives Etsy more to show), look after early buyers so reviews follow, and review what’s working each month. Read how to get your first Etsy sale next.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a business to sell prints on Etsy in the UK?
You can start as a sole trader. Once your trading income passes £1,000 in a tax year you need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC. Etsy also reports seller sales to HMRC under the digital platform reporting rules.
Can I sell prints without buying stock?
Yes. With print on demand, the printer prints and posts each order after it’s placed, so you only pay for what sells.
How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?
Opening the shop is free in most countries; you pay US$0.20 (about 15p) to publish each listing, then fees when something sells.
